Species Availability

This is a general guide of when different species will be available. Please note that all salmon species have a couple weeks of timeline variance depending on year, run, weather, water level, etc.

Alaskan Salmon

King Salmon

The largest of salmon species, these fish tend to be the best fish for smoking , in our opinion. These big guys put up a fight.

Usually they will start showing up in our area in early June and run through the end of the month.

Sockeye Salmon

Sockeyes are also known as "the torpedo fish" because they move so quickly and jump so high. This is our favorite for barbecued salmon and jerky.

Typically available mid-July through mid-August, but do not tend to be very abundant in the Susitna River and its tributaries.

Silver Salmon

The perfect blend of King and Sockeye, this species is a great all-purpose fish. We catch these to smoke, can, dehydrate, grill, and do all the things because this fish is so versatile.

The sweet spot for these guys tend to be late July through the middle of August

Pink Salmon

This is the most abundant salmon in our area and tend to be easy to hook and easier to land due to their smaller size

This salmon tends to show up in early July and is usually available until the middle of August and are typically more plentiful in even-numbered years (ie 2022, 2024, etc.)

The Other Guys

Rainbow Trout, Grayling, Pike, Burbot, and White Fish are available throughout most of the summer months.
